Season Update - Raspberries and Blueberries

27th July 2015

“Raspberries have had a fantastic year so far, with Kantar1 showing value growth of +16% year on year with both penetration increasing by 3.5% to 37.7% and frequency up slightly to 8 times a year”, says Nick Marston, Managing Director of Berry Gardens Ltd at Fruit Focus, the fruit industry leading event held on Wednesday 22nd July at East Malling Research, Kent.

“Although we are only part way through the season, sales volume and overall prices should be improved on 2014, says Nick.

The raspberry season is currently running 3 weeks behind last year, with Scottish fruit just starting. Berry Gardens forecast increasing their UK volumes to end the season +10% year on year.

Alastair Brooks, Berry Garden Chairman adds, “this year, Driscoll’s market leading varietal offer has been joined by Driscoll’s® Riviera, a superb early primocane with great fruit size and outstanding flavour”.

Blueberries also continue to enjoy significant growth year on year and are now valued at £235 million, an increase of 21.31%. The growth is being driven by customers demand for blueberries with several retailers adopting quite aggressive pricing during imported peak supply. Pricing for UK fruit is similar to last year with substantial volume growth expected.

“British Blueberries grown by Berry Gardens growers have performed very well this year lead by varieties such as Duke, Draper and Liberty, says Nick Marston. We have been working closely with our strategic partner Driscoll’s and will be introducing Driscoll’s® Sweet Jane, and Barbara Ann to the market next year. Produce from our test plots this year have delivered a consistent rounded flavour.   As demand for British blueberries grows it is the ideal time to introduce new varieties”.

Nick continues, “last year we introduced a snacking pack format and this has been picked up by retailers, reinforcing the blueberry message as the superfood and a healthy, convenient snack”.
